Wearing Your Light
White Care Guide
One of the biggest concerns I've heard is the fear of staining your white clothing - here are some ways I care for my white wardrobe and keep it stain-free.
- Remove the lids from takeaway drinks and wipe all sides before drinking as they are leaks waiting to happen.
- Remove and open covers and packets of food, snacks, sauces, juices at a distance from you and make sure there are no leaks before consuming.
- 'Face over the bowl' (this is what I always tell my kids over meals and myself too) so drips and drops go into the bowl and not onto your clothing.
Washing White
- Wash whites separately
Always wash white clothes separately from colored items to prevent dye transfer in the same wash cycle.
- Treat stains immediately
Use a quality detergent designed for whites and spot-treat stains with a pre-treatment solution like Dr Beckmann Oxi-Power Foam Stain Remover before washing.
- Consider adding whitening boosters like oxygen bleach, borax, or baking soda with your laundry detergent. These are helpful in maintaining the bright white appearance of clothing.
- Pro-tip: Opt for oxygen bleach over chlorine bleach as it is gentler on fabrics.
- Try natural alternatives
To remove discolouration and keep your whites gleaming, add one cup of lemon juice or distilled vinegar to the wash cycle. While both have natural bleaching elements, lemon also helps your clothes smell fresh.
- To rid of perspiration and deodorant stains, pre-treat with liquid detergent, dishwashing liquid or clear shampoo.
- Simply apply directly onto the stain and scrub with an old toothbrush.
- Rinse with clear water after, and wash the fabric as usual in the washing machine.
Knitwear Care
- Cold hand wash separately using gentle detergent. Do not bleach, soak, rub or wring. Rinse well, do not spin or tumble dry. Gently roll in towel to remove excess water.
- Knitwear should always be air-dried. Dry flat in shade easing back into shape. Consider using a drying rack or hanging laundry mesh. Cold iron under cloth.
To prevent knitted clothes from stretching, fold or roll your knitwear to store. Avoid hanging your knitwear on a hanger, as it will stretch out.
